MODERN MUSIC STUDIO BARRIE

FAQ

Answers to Modern Music Studio’s most frequently asked questions about our lessons

HOW LONG ARE LESSONS?

Guitar, piano, drum, bass and vocal lessons range from 30 minutes to 1 hour in length. In general we suggest 30 minutes for beginner students or students under the age of 9 (exceptional students may request longer). 45 minute lessons are ideal for intermediate students between 9 and 15 years of age. Advanced students may choose 1 hour.

HOW OFTEN DO I TAKE MY LESSON?

Lessons are taken weekly at the same time and day. There are no lessons on statutory holidays. We offer online lessons to students in case of illness or bad weather. We do not provide credit for missed lessons. If we have to cancel lessons for any reason, you will receive a credit on your next invoice.

DO I NEED TO BRING AN INSTRUMENT WITH ME?

Guitar, Bass, and Ukulele students bring their own instrument, and ideally their tuner (or smart phone with tuner app). Electric Guitar and Bass Guitar students need not bring an amp, and drum students just need a pair of sticks. (We don't ask piano students to carry their piano into the studio). All students should ensure they bring their binder/folder containing any materials from previous lessons. We do have loaners for anyone who requires them, and we even rent instruments out for a fee (subject to availability). Keep in mind the Barrie Public Library has instruments available to rent for 6 week periods!

CAN I TAKE A LESSON EVERY OTHER WEEK?

Unfortunately, due to the nature of a teaching schedule, we are unable to provide this option, as it would take away a time slot from a potential weekly student. If you are able to find another student who wishes to take bi-weekly lessons on the same day and time, we may be able to make such an arrangement.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I PRACTICE?

Every day. Every Day. Every day. It is the #1 thing we tell each and every one of our students. Find some time to practice every day. How long is up to you. For younger students, as little as 10 minutes a day can make a big difference, but it has to be every day. Small amounts every day are better than large amounts every 2 or 3 days. Consistency is key. If you want to learn, you have to practice every day.

DO YOU OFFER GROUP LESSONS?

In the summer, we will be offering a "band camp" music day camp for intermediate and advanced students. Students will be given the opportunity to form a band, learn a song, and record it here in the studio. We will learn about how to promote a band, how to write a song, how to rehearse, and how to mix a multi-track song. This is only offered in July and August.

WHY SHOULD I LEARN TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT?

Because it's fun! But also, did you know there are many studies that show that students who learn to play a musical instrument excel in other areas of school like math, science, and languages. It's no surprise why. The neural pathways used when learning a musical instrument are the same pathways we use in language development. And music is full of patterns and sequences, just like math and science. Music can enrich more than just your soul. It can enrich your mind too!
