Music and Winter: The ideal time to start music lessons

A story about how to pass those wintry days learning an instrument.

I love this time of year. I really do. Don't get me wrong, summers in central Ontario, particularly here in Barrie are stunning. We take every opportunity to play outside when we can. We love camping and hiking and on really nice days, and I'll setup my guitar lessons in the backyard under the shade of our huge silver maple tree (piano students aren't quite so portable unfortunately). But winter provides a new opportunity. As the weather cools, and the sun begins to set earlier and earlier, we may find more time for musical pursuits.

Summer time for me is a time to enjoy music. I play by the campfire with friends and family, on the back deck on a quiet summer evening. Normally I'll be playing my favorite songs, not focussing on technique or theory, just playing.

The winter time allows me to get back to that serious business of learning music and my instrument once again. (Yes, even I am still learning. Any serious musician is). Those shorter days in the sun can be longer days sitting at the piano, or with my guitar. I'll often find myself writing and recording new songs at this time of year.

If you're new to music, whether just starting out, or only thinking about starting out, this is the perfect time. With the holidays approaching, there is music all around us, and inspiration is easy to find.

Whether it's piano, guitar, bass, ukulele drums or vocals, the winter time is a perfect time of year to get started, or perhaps to pick up where you left off.

We do still have some lesson times available, so send us an email at, or call or text 705-770-0826 to book your lesson time today. You'll find those cold months melting away much quicker as you launch your musical journey!

Have a safe and happy holiday season.
